Wing Bikes Freedom 2 Review

The Freedom 2 by Wing Bikes aims to offer a blend of utility and style, wrapped in a lightweight aluminum frame. Targeted toward both daily commuters and casual cyclists, it boasts several features that are unique to the Wing products. The Freedom 2 is currently going for $1,100, so let's delve into the details to see if it lives up to the hype.

First Impressions
The Freedom 2 has a sleek design, emphasizing high-polish and ergonomic components. The built-in headlight and taillights are immediately noticeable, pointing to the bike's emphasis on safety. The removable battery design shows thoughtfulness for urban commuters who may need to charge their batteries indoors. This is a big step up from bikes that have a similar design but do not have removable batteries. Battery bonus point goes to Wing!
Performance and Handling
Speed and Motor
The motor is a force to be reckoned with; its top speed of 25 MPH makes it well-suited for quick commutes. With 55Nm of torque, you can tackle hills without breaking a sweat. While it’s not overly powerful, it’s got enough oomph to cruise around easily.
Battery Life
The UL 2271 certified battery promises good longevity and offers a range of up to 60 miles per charge, making it perfect for both short commutes and longer weekend rides. Now 60 miles is definitely best case scenario, and doesn’t factor in using the throttle at all. While there are some that will ride it that way, most of us probably want to throttle a bit here and there, so you’ll most likely get less than the best case scenario.
Drivetrain
The Shimano Tourney rear derailleur has 7-Speeds. This provides enough gear range for city and off-road use. Shimano RapidFire shifters make gear transition smooth and effortless, and they are a much sleeker shifter, compared the Shimano SiS Index shifter we commonly see at this price point.
Display
The custom LCD keeps you well-informed about your ride, offering speed tracking, distance tracking, assist level, and battery level. It also allows you to activate the built-in lights and horn, a useful addition for night riding and safety.
Comfort and Ergonomics
Frame and Cockpit
The lightweight aluminum frame makes this bike easy to maneuver, and the high-polish ergonomic handlebars offer a comfortable grip. We’ve mentioned the throttle a few times already, and you won’t see it, because it’s in the box still. If you want your throttle you’ll have to install it yourself, based on our experience. Not a huge deal, and Wing provides some literature to help you install that.
Seat and Posture
The bike is designed to accommodate a wide range of rider heights, making it a versatile choice for most riders between 5'6" and 6'4". The standover height is right at 30”, so it’s a bit of a hike to get your legs over if you’re a bit on the shorter side, though 5’6” is still a reasonable minimum height here.
Additional Features
- Anti-theft: Comes with tamper detection & alarm.
- Integrated Lights: For added safety and visibility.
- 5-level Pedal Assist & Walk Mode: For a customizable riding experience.
- Motion Alarm: An added layer of security.
What Could Be Improved
- Brakes: Though functional, upgrading to hydraulic brakes could offer enhanced stopping power.
- Weight: At 39 pounds, it's relatively lightweight but there's always room for improvement. The design screams ultra-light, and it’s almost there.
Final Verdict
The Freedom 2 by Wing Bikes is a versatile, stylish, and functional e-bike, suitable for a range of riders. With its powerful motor, long-range battery, and thoughtful design elements like anti-theft features and built-in lights, this bike is a solid investment for anyone looking to enhance their daily commute or leisure rides.
